All of us have probably already heard of the Big Bang Theory, after all it is the most widely accepted theory of the birth of the universe however there are a variety of other theories. Though there is a diverse amount of theories to pick from, we have found possibly the most logical and probable theory, and it might as well make you question the Big Bang
The Big Crunch actually resembles pretty close to the theory of the Big Bang except for one exception. Though Both theories state that the universe had started through the outburst of energy contributing to the continuous expansion of the universe their stances on the potential end of the universe. In the case of the Big Bang, it states that the everlasting expansion of the universe will continue on forever, however the Big Crunch views it in a more mathematically logical way. In the case of the Big Crunch, the universe isn’t exactly expanding but inflating, and according to Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, when one event occurs the reverse is also likely to occur after the extreme. As stated by Newton’s 3rd Law, every action has an equal or opposite reaction. And in this case the reaction would be collapsing back into the singularity and in the end create a black hole that will absorb all matter.
Now at first glance it may seem crazy, but after some thinking you will realize that it's actually correct. The expansion of the universe creates a larger amount of objects in the universe, and each of those objects has a finite quantity of gravitational force. Now it may not happen immediately, but gradually the overall mass of all the objects in the universe could potentially slow down the expansion of the universe and at a point, reverse the expansion.
Now, I know what most of you are thinking at this point. If the universe should have slowed down, has it done so over the 13.8 billion years till today? And the answer is that it has. We do have evidence that the expansion has slowed down following the beginning of the expansion but we still can’t prove the Big Crunch. This is because right after the slowed expansion, the expansion had accelerated. What is even more bizarre is that the expansion of the universe closer to the edge is faster than the expansion that is farther away.
Now all this must be driving your mind crazy, but the reason is because of an unknown variable that was not counted into these theories which scientists now call as Dark Energy. Now even scientists do not know what Dark Energy actually is but what we do know is that the amount of dark energy is what will prove either the Big Bang or the Big Crunch right. If there is a large quantity of Dark Energy then we will probably be looking at the Big Bang. but if there is a smaller quantity then we are probably looking at the Big Crunch.
Now all this won’t happen until billions and billions of years but assuming that there is not enough Dark Energy, what will happen? Well first thing is that the contraction of the universe will start off pretty slow but as galaxies move closer together, it will accelerate. Stars, Planets and even Black Holes will break down into atoms and even those atoms will start to break down. Things will become even more chaotic as matter moves closer to the singularity, as theories suggest that Space-Time itself will be shattered and fundamental concepts of physics such as position and direction will be totally meaningless and will turn into a huge blackhole. And whatever happens after that is entirely clueless. We might see the creation of a new universe or we might even be living in a cyclical cycle of the births and deaths of many universes. Its entirely up to our imagination.
